Argentina has a longstanding countryside tradition. Its rural areas are one of the most important part of its culture, especially in the northern part of the country. Gaucho culture is known all over the world, and experiencing this side of Argentina, worlds away from the bustling city life of places like Buenos Aires, is a great way to get to know the country. In fact, there is even a name for it: rural tourism.

Estancias in Corrientes

Rural tourism varies, but a visit to the estancias of Argentina is perhaps one of the best ways to indulge in the country life. The countryside of Argentina is beautiful, even in the less notable areas of the country, so you will never be without a wonderful view. Estancias are basically grand country homes, similar to an estate. They usually include multiple guestrooms, a large amount of land, different fields for sports, and any number of other amenities and services.

Corrientes is an especially great province in which to experience the countryside, as its landscapes are lush with vegetation and animal life. There are estancias all over the province, which are good for either a day in the country with a group of friends, or for staying and enjoying yourself for a few days.

At an estancia, you’ll be treated to amazing, traditional food, including famous Argentine meat, grilled by a skilled gaucho or asador, and often freshly baked breads, empanadas, locally caught fish, and other treats. During the day, you can relax on the grounds of the estate, or take advantage of one of the many activities often offered, such as horseback riding, fishing, hiking, or even hunting. Each area of the province will offer something different, but you will undoubtedly have no shortage of activities. For more information about the different areas of Corrientes, see this Argentina Travel Guide.

Most estancias, such as Estancia San Lorenzo, which is in the northeast of the province, have enough room for 10 to 12 guests at a time. This means personalized service, and an intimate stay, but with plenty of room to breath. It is especially perfect for groups who wish to have their own private home and services. Estancia San Lorenzo also offers excursions to the nearby lagoons De Luna and Galarza, as well as horseback riding, bird watching, and other wildlife activities.

Estancia Yapeyú is another example of a typical Corrientes estancia, with farm and forest grounds. Along the Río Uruguay, it is also surrounded by plenty of wildlife and activities. It is easily accessible, just 5 kilometers out of the town of Yapeyú. It offers similar activities as Estancia San Lorenzo, with the addition of kayak excursions. Both estancias allow you to get your hands dirty, if you want, and help out with the daily chores of an authentic Argentine ranch. And afterwards, you will enjoy a home-cooked meal, some fine Argentine wine, and some quality time in the common rooms by the fire.

There is simply no better way to get to know true Argentine culture, then some time spent in the country.
