It can be said that the number one reason that visitors travel through the province of Misiones is to see the beautiful and world famous Iguazu Falls. These massive falls are located just outside of Puerto Iguazu, a small town located in the middle of the Iguazu National Park that hosts just a few hotels, hostels, and restaurants, and thrives year round from its heavy tourism numbers. The Iguazu Falls, bordering both Argentina and Brazil, are made up of more than 275 individual waterfalls, some more than 82 metres in height, and stretches over more than 2.7km along the Iguazu River.
The Iguazu falls can be accessed from both the Argentine side, which holds 2/3 of the falls, and the Brazilian side, the other 1/3. From Argentina, the falls can be viewed by taking the Tren Ecologico de la Selva (Rainforest Ecological Train), and then by following designated walkways and trails, some of which bring visitors directly above some of the largest waterfalls and some of which put visitors directly below the falls, ensuring they leave covered in the waters from Iguazu. From Brazil, visitors will be brought to higher walkways in order to enjoy an amazing panoramic view, some at quite a distance from the falls. The most famous, largest, and loudest fall, is called Garganta de Diablo (Devil’s Throat), where the water plummets down 70 metres at rapid speeds, crashing and draining into the Parana River.
The Iguazu Falls are for any type of traveler and do not require any sort of difficult trekking or hiking abilities. For those who wish to travel to the Brazilian side of the falls, talk to one of the local travel company’s or hotels to arrange appropriate travel that will take you across the border and safely back in one day. Be sure to bring good walking shoes, sunglasses, and some sort of raincoat as the Falls are notorious for giving each of their visitors a warm welcome by sometimes a heavy or continuous spray of water.
