In the Province of Santa Cruz, located in the south of Argentina, is the small and quaint city of Perito Moreno. This small town lies on the Rio Diseado and is a perfect stopover on the way to Cueva de Las Menos, the Parque Nacional Perito Moreno, or the town of Los Antiguos and the Lago Buenos Aires.

The most north western town in Santa Cruz and home to only 3500 residents, Perito Moreno is known for being a farmer’s town, its outdoor scenery, and for its proximity to the Lago Buenos Aires.  One of the main reasons for coming through or staying in Perito Moreno is to head to a few of the nearby natural attractions and towns.

Cueva de Las Manos (Cave of the Hands)

South of Perito Moreno is Cueva de Los Manos, an historical monument and World Heritage Site. The cave features pre-Columbian cave paintings, more than 1000 years old, of hands and animals; its has been noted that 90% of the hand paintings are of the left hand and the majority of the animals are llamas.

Parque Nacional Perito Moreno

Approximately 310km from Perito Moreno, this beautiful park is made up of almost 115,000 hectares of land, and borders the Chilean border. A mix of sedimentary peaks, lakes, and forest make up this diverse park, as well as numerous animals such as wildcats, pumas, foxes, dears, condors, flamingos, swans, and more.  The park is best to be visited during the summer when temperatures are fairly mild, although cold weather clothing and equipment should always be brought, and it is best to avoid this park during those winter months when temperature reach extremely low temperatures.

Los Antiguos

This small village sits of the shore of the Lago Buenos Aires, the second largest body of water in South America which is divided between both Argentina and Chile.  Los Antiguos is a farming village, harvesting raspberries, strawberries, cherries, apples, apricots, pears, peaches, and plums.  Every year, the Fiesta de la Cereza (Cherry Festival) is held, where rodeo’s, music, and a town celebration takes place.

Lago Buenos Aires

Covering 2,240km2 of area between Argentina and Chile, this beautiful crystal blue lake is a fantastic place to enjoy water sports, fish, or swim during the summer months. Tours or water activities can be arranged in Los Antiguos.
